- Solid Waste
The City of Wetaskiwin collects, diverts, and/or disposes of solid waste from local customers, and ensures all disposal operations meet the rigid safety, environmental, monitoring, recording, and reporting parameters of Federal, Provincial, and local standards.
Waste diversion programs and recycling are important facets of meeting City Council's solid waste diversion goals in order to extend the life of our current landfill.
Delays in production have resulted in a wait for customers seeking new 242 litre waste bins. These will not be available until early in 2023. Please contact the Operations Facility at 780.361.4436 if your current waste bin is damaged, or if you want to upsize to the (grey) 242 litre bin.

Garbage Subscription Options
The City of Wetaskiwin has a garbage subscription program that offers a user-pay approach to waste handling. Residents pay for waste services based on the volume of garbage they generate.
Do you have the right size garbage bin for your family’s needs?
Garbage is picked up in the City of Wetaskiwin once per week. It is important to know how much garbage you and your family accumulates in a week. Once you have that information, it is easy to choose the correct size bin. Use the chart below to choose the right size:
Weekly garbage accumulation
Garbage bin size
Up to 2 standard black garbage bags
Small bin (121 litres)
3 to 4 standard black garbage bags
Medium bin (242 litres)
5 to 6 standard black garbage bags
Large bin (363 litres)
It is important to choose the correct sized bin for your needs to ensure your bin is not packed too tightly, is not too heavy, and the lid can close properly (to prevent animals from getting into the garbage).
If you have any questions or would like to change the size of garbage bin you have at your residence, call the Operations Facility at 780.361.4436.

Waste Collection Routes
The City of Wetaskiwin is divided into four sections to maximize the efficiency of our residential waste collection routes. Collection occurs Tuesday through Friday each week (with exceptions on holidays) and is carried out by two automated residential collection trucks. Each truck collects trash from an estimated 450 bins per day and only unloads once at the end of the day.
What if my garbage pickup day lands on a civic holiday?
If your garbage pickup day lands on a civic holiday, a double garbage pickup will be done. Double garbage pickup is when staff complete two residential garbage routes in one day, instead of doing one-per-day. Civic holidays that land on Fridays will be picked up on the Thursday prior. Civic holidays that fall on a Monday will be picked up on the following Tuesday. Administration will clarify when double garbage pickup takes place by posting the information to the Website News Flash on the Homepage and the City’s official social media channels.
